Grab some sidewalk chalk (it's only about $4 at Walmart or Staples) and prepare to help save lives on your campus with very little money and while having fun at the same time! Get ready for National Pro-Life Chalk Day, happening across the country in just a few days this upcoming Thursday, October 2nd.
National Pro-Life Chalk Day has been incredibly popular among groups like ours, and you can get really creative when it comes to chalking (check out the pictures at the end of this post!). Chalking is super easy, very inexpensive, and lots of fun. It also inspires other students to join the pro-life movement and gives you a way to express your pro-life views through the use of art.
Here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: Pick up sidewalk chalk (about $4 at Walmart, Staples, or other craft stores here in Tempe)
Step 2: Get together with your friends at ASU Students for Life. Bring your chalk and look for us on Hayden Lawn at 9:00 PM on Wednesday, October 1st!
Step 3: Find a heavily trafficked public area on the ASU campus (there are a LOT of locations)
Step 4: Chalk short pro-life messages in large letters everywhere
Here are a few ideas for slogans:
- Abortion Hurts Women
- Women Need Love Not Abortion
- Human Rights for All: Born & Preborn
- Heartbeat Begins Beating at 21 Days
- Adoption Not Abortion
- Love them both
- True Feminists are Pro-Life
- Peace Begins in the Womb
- Planned Parenthood Protects Rapists (you can cite the recent case of the Planned Parenthood here in Tempe failing to report the rape of a teenage patient by Tyler Kost, learn more about this tragic incident here and here)
- Women Regret Abortion
And here is Maggie's (our president's) favorite idea:
- Draw 3,500 baby feet or hearts and chalk "Abortion Stops 3,500 Hearts Every Day"
Fetal Development Information:
You can (and are encouraged to) chalk about the development of a preborn baby inside the womb. For more information on fetal development, see our fetal development information page.
Pregnancy Resource Center information:
You can (and are encouraged to) chalk information about nearby pregnancy centers here in Tempe, such as the Aid to Women Center, located at Mill and Broadway. They offer confidential pregnancy and STI testing, options counseling, and ultrasound services for free or at very low cost to ASU students and we have their permission to chalk about them. Their phone number is 480-966-1902 and their website is www.aidtowomencenter.org, chalk that along with their name!
Also, feel free to chalk about the Hope Mobile Unit. It will be on campus again soon offering free pregnancy testing, limited STI testing (for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV), and options counseling for ASU students.
Keep it appropriate please!
You are completely free to brainstorm more ideas and chalk them out. We love hearing new catchy pro-life slogans that you can come up with! However, if you have any doubts about whether a slogan would be appropriate or not (for example, saying "Abortion is murder" would not be appropriate due to its accusatory nature), please discuss it with a member of our leadership team. Also, please refrain from sketching graphic abortion images.
Some policy stuff from ASU:
- No spray paint, varnish, sealant, or other permanent materials. Just use standard sidewalk chalk please!
- Use washable chalk that can be easily removed at a later date without significant time or labor intensive effort.
- Chalk only on the sidewalk. Do not chalk on walls, buildings, or other surfaces that are not customarily walked on.
Some tips from our friends at Students for Life of America:
- Don’t get discouraged if your “artwork” is scuffed or washed off by haters. Guess what that means? They saw it! (one of our student pro-life groups in Michigan just had this happen)
- Place messages at different angles and perspectives so foot traffic from every direction will catch a glimpse.
- Keep the messages short and succinct; you only have a brief moment to get your point across. Make it count!
- Use bright or pastel colors like pink, blue, white, and yellow.
